If 2016 is the year of movie franchise reboots, 2017 is the year for movie sequels. And to guide you, here are the Top 13 most awaited sequels and installments.


Underworld: Blood Wars – January 6

Propelled by the successful release in 2003, The Underworld series is releasing the fifth installment in 2017 entitled Blood Wars. Selene, the lead character played by Kate Beckinsale, is shown to have attained new powers and is facing newer and deadlier enemies. Fans are asking though, where is Eve? And more importantly, where is Michael?

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter – January 27

A movie series with yet another female badass played by Milla Jovovich. The Resident Evil movie series based on the video game of the same name, which have had 5 previous installments over the course of 15 years, is finally ending. And as much as we love watching Jovovich destroy zombies and level up, one could only hope that the series would finally rest in peace, for good.

John Wick: Chapter 2 – February 10

The legendary hitman is back. Directed by Chad Stahleski, one of the original directors from the first movie released in 2014. The trailer gives a glimpse of John Wick, played by the ever youthful Keanu Reeves, reluctantly giving up his retirement in order to honor a blood oath he cannot refuse. Luckily, this means more Keanu in smart suits.

Logan – March 3

The Wolverine movie series is also ending. Directed by James Mangold and starred in by the face all have come to recognize as the actual wolverine, Hugh Jackman. The movie jumps forward from the previous installment, The Wolverine in 2013, and is set in a post-apocalyptic world. One where the wolverine has aged and is no longer able to regenerate as quickly as he did before.  But he is no longer alone, having found Laura, a young woman with wolverine blood.

The Fate of the Furious – April 14

The eight installment to The Fast and the Furious franchise comes with a shocking turn. Dom, the main man of the series played by Vin Diesel, is being tracked down by his old gang who he has apparently betrayed. And with the introduction of new cast members like Charlie Theron and Helen Mirren, the ride has just become even more exciting.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 – May 5

The most unconventional band of guardians is returning to bring more laughs and great soundtracks this May. Directed by James Gunn, the movie is set two months after the first film. Peter Quill a.k.a. Star-Lord, goes on another adventure with his newfound family while trying to uncover the truth about his parentage. And most importantly, the movie will feature the intensely cute Baby Groot and his impatient babysitter, Rocket, the talking raccoon.

Alien: Covenant – May 19

Upon the release of Prometheus, fans have quickly connected it to Director Ridley Scott’s Sci-Fi horror series, Alien. Even though he initially distanced the new film, he has since confirmed that it was in fact, a prequel. And in 2017, he is releasing the sequel to the prequel, Alien: Covenant, which is set to feature the cyborg  played by Michael Fassbender who survived the attack in Prometheus. It is also speculated that the movie will show how the alien invaded the spaceship shown in the first Alien movie in 1979.

Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Men Tell No Tales – May 26

Directed by Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg, the fifth installment is said to draw inspiration from the first movie which was released back in 2011 by taking on a less dark but equally humorous turn. Captain Jack Sparrow, the ever eccentric pirate, seeks an elusive and powerful artifact, the trident of Poseidon. He plans to use is against another captain, Captain Salazar, who is determined to destroy every pirate who sails in the high seas.

Wonder Woman – June 2

With the introduction in Batman vs. Superman, DC fans are geared for the solo movie of  Gal Gadot as the great Amazonian Princess, Diana, a.k.a. Wonder Woman. The film is set to lightly feature her background and would instead focus on her involvement in World War I. An easter egg in the form of photographs from Batman vs. Superman.

Spider-Man Homecoming – July 14

Marvel finally produced their own Spider-Man movie starring Tom Holland who appeared as Peter Parker in Captain America: Civil War and received praises for bringing charisma and humor to the character. A great shift from Columbia Pictures’ Amazing Spiderman tone. The movie is set after civil war and will feature Tony Stark as his mentor.

Thor: Ragnarok – Nov 3

Directed by Taika Wititi, the movie is set after Avengers: Age of Ultron and Doctor Strange. Christ Hemsworth returns as Thor and teams up with Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange to fight off intergalactic threats. Fans are crossing their fingers that one of the deadliest Marvel villain, Galactus, who is collecting the infinity gems will also be featured or at least, introduced.

Justice League – Nov 17

Directed by Zack Snyder. Justice League is set months after Batman vs. Superman and takes on the same dark tone. Bruce Wayne is inspired by Superman’s sacrifice to save earth and with the help of a new ally, Diana a.k.a Wonder Woman, he forms an alliance with other individuals who possess superpowers in order to defeat a more dangerous enemy.

Star Wars: Episode VIII – December 15

The last project finished by Carrie Fisher before her untimely death in 2016. Star Wars: Episode VIII is the eigth installment in the Star Wars franchise and the second movie in the sequel trilogy. It is set to take off after Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens and is yet to release plot and teasers. Protection Status
